John Carter 2012

John Carter In 1881, Edgar Rice Burroughs attends the funeral of his uncle John Carter, a former American Civil War Confederate Army captain who passed away suddenly. The body is buried in the tomb, which can only be opened by the inside, as Carter was instructed. The attorney of Carter gives his personal journal to Burroughs to read.

In an instant flashback to 1868 in the Arizona Territory, the Union Colonel Powell is arrested by Carter with hopes that Carter can aid in the fight against local Apache. Carter escapes from his prison cell, but fails to make it to the other side from the U.S. cavalry soldiers in close pursuit. After a run-in with a band of Apaches, Carter and a wounded Powell are pursued until they hide in the cave, which is revealed to be brimming with gold. A Thern appears inside the cave at this moment, shocked by the two men, attacks them with a knife; Carter is killed, but accidentally activates the powerful Thern’s medallion and is then transported by accident to the ruined and dying planet, Barsoom, which is known to Carter as Mars. Due to his differing bone density and Mars’s low gravity, Carter is able to jump high and perform feats of astonishing strength. The Green Martian Tharks take him in and Tars Tarkas and their Jeddak.

In the other part of Barsoom Barsoom, the Red Martian cities of Helium and Zodanga are at war for a thousand years. Sab Than, Jeddak from Zodanga, is armed with a unique weapon he gathered from Matai Shang and proposes a ceasefire. He also proposes that the war should be ended by Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium. Carter helps the Princess, and she flees.

Carter, Dejah, and Tarkas’s daughter, Sola, reach a spot in a sacred river to discover an avenue for Carter to get back to Earth. They find that the medallions are powered by a “ninth ray” that is also the source for Sab Than’s weapon. They are later attacked by a vicious race called the Warhoon under the direction of Shang. Carter and Dejah are then taken back to Zodanga. Disillusioned, Dejah is reluctantly able to marry Sabthan. She also gives Carter instructions for how to make use of the medallion to be able to return to Earth. Carter decides to stay and is captured by Shang who gives him an explanation of the role of Therns and how they influence the world’s civilizations to their doom, feeding off the resources of the planet as a result. They intend to do the same thing with Barsoom by choosing Sab Than as the ruler of the planet. Carter returns to the Tharks along with Sola to seek their assistance. They discover that Tarkas was killed by Tal Hajus, a brutal brute. Carter and Tarkas battle two massive Great White-Apes. This is before Carter takes out Hajus. Hajus becomes the leader of Tharks.

The Thark army charges on Helium and defeats the Zodangan army. Sab Than is killed. Shang must escape. Carter becomes the prince of Helium through the marriage of Dejah. Carter and Dejah agree to live forever on Mars following their first night together. He throws his medallion. Shang appears briefly and confronts Carter to a fight, causing him to return to Earth. Carter embarks on a long quest to find the medallions they have on Earth; after several years he appears to die suddenly and requests unusual funeral arrangements — as if he had discovered a medallion, as returning to Mars could cause his Earth body in a coma-like state, and makes Burroughs his guardian.

Burroughs is back in the present and goes back to the tomb of Carter, with clues to open it. As he is about to start the Thern is seen. He raises a weapon , and then shoots Carter in the back. He reveals that he had never found another medallion; instead, he devised an elaborate plan to lure a Thern from hiding, winning Shang’s challenge. Carter utilizes the medallion of the deceased Thern in order to go back to Barsoom
